Dennis Energy and Climate Committee reviews February storm shelter, communications failures. Michael Andranovich, AmeriCorps Program Coordinator II, reported the Dennis-Yarmouth emergency shelter operated 92 hours during the February 23 blizzard, housing approximately 225 people at peak capacity with support from two school resource officers, 18 AmeriCorps members, nurses, EMTs, and paramedics. He recommended establishing a Community Emergency Response Team of trained volunteers and maintaining emergency supply containers in climate-controlled facilities.
The committee identified critical gaps: residents in some town areas received no communication from the town during the storm, phones at Town Hall and the Senior Center went unanswered for days, and NOAA weather bands remained silent, raising questions about how the town would execute mandatory evacuations.
